Azores is an archipelago of 9 volcanic islands, located at about 1300 Km west of the Portuguese coast. The Azores are portuguese but I had never been to the islands before. A few years ago my childhood best friend and her boyfriend, now husband, moved there and we have been invited to visit since then. They moved to São Miguel, the largest of the islands, and have already been to eight of the nine islands in the archipelago. We had only five full days, so we limited our visit to São Miguel, and still we missed some things.
Os Açores são um arquipélago de 9 ilhas vulcânicas, localizadas a cerca de 1300 km a oeste da costa portuguesa. Apesar de serem portugueses nunca tinha estado nos Açores. Há uns anos atrás a minha melhor amiga de infância e o seu namorado, agora marido, mudaram-se para lá e desde então que estamos convidados a visitar as ilhas. Eles mudaram-se para São Miguel, a maior das ilhas e já foram a oito das nove ilhas do arquipélago. Nós tínhamos apenas cinco dias completos por isso limitamo-nos a explorar São Miguel, e ainda assim não vimos algumas coisas.
São Miguel is known as the green island, because of its beautiful green fields and mountains, filled with lined cows enjoying the fresh grass. The islands have a very special climate, that can change in a blink of an eye and is very hard to predict. It can be grey and foggy on one side of the island and sunny on the other side.
São Miguel é conhecido como a ilha verde por causa de seus belos campos e montanhas verdes, repletos de vacas alinhadas que se deliciam com a erva fresca. As ilhas têm um clima muito especial, que pode mudar num piscar de olhos e é muito difícil de prever. Pode estar cinzento e nublado de um lado da ilha e ensolarado do outro lado.
We used the app Spotazores, that uses cameras spread all over the island, to show where the good weather is. In the panoramic picture below you can see the heavy dark clouds on one side of the island and white clouds with blue sky on the other one.
Usamos a app Spotazores, que usa cameras espalhadas por toda a ilha para mostrar onde está o bom tempo. Na imagem panorâmica abaixo pode ver-se de um lado nuvens escuras e do outro nuvens brancas e céu azul.
The Azores are not only known by its beauty but also by its food - a lot of fish, very tender meat, milk and pineapples - and hydrangeas, a type of flower that can be found in all of the Azorean islands. Hydrangeas are at its best around May and now in August they were already getting old. However, they were still there, turning the roads and landscapes into colourful and beautiful sceneries.
Os Açores não são apenas conhecidos pela sua beleza, mas também pela boa comida - muito peixe, carne tenra, leite e ananás - e hortenses (ou hortênsias), um tipo de flor que pode ser encontrada em todas as ilhas açorianas. As hortênsias atingem o seu auge de beleza mais ou menos em maio e agora em agosto já estavam a envelhecer. Ainda assim havia muitas e as estradas e as paisagens estavam transformadas em cenários coloridos e bonitos.
A gorgeous landscape, an itinerary made by "locals" and a borrowed car to go everywhere were pretty good conditions and all we had to do was to explore and enjoy the island. And so we did. Everyday we explored a different region of the area, always depending on where the clouds were. We took way too many pictures, as usual, but this time even more than normal and it would be impossible to show everything in one post. I will write one post per region instead and I hope you think it will be worth reading and that I manage to show just how exciting it was to be in São Miguel.
Com as melhores condições reunidas - uma paisagem deslumbrante, um itinerário feito por "locais" e um carro emprestado para ir a todo lado - tudo o que tínhamos a fazer era explorar e aproveitar a ilha. E assim fizemos. Todos os dias explorávamos uma região diferente, dependendo de onde as nuvens estavam. Desta vez tiramos ainda mais fotos que de costume e seria impossível mostrar tudo num só post aqui. Assim farei um post por região e espero que achem que vale a pena ler e que eu consiga mostrar o quão excitantes é a ilha de São Miguel.
Day 5 - the leftovers
The islands of the Azores have always intrigue me. They are a long way from the nearest mainland. I look forward to reading more about the island you visited.
