Lagoa do Fogo - São Miguel

The Lagoa do Fogo (translated would be lake of fire) is the hardest to see in São Miguel, because it is almost constantly surrounding by clouds. However, in our fourth day in the island the weather forecast was promising. Early in the morning the lake had its usual layer of clouds on top, but my friend told us to be around the area and keep checking the webpage with the cameras all over the island (spotazores.com), and as soon as the clouds would lift we should go there.

We drove to the center of the island, skipped the hot pools in Caldeira Velha, because they were just too crowded and visited the waterfall Salto do Cabrito.

When we checked the cameras again we saw that the clouds were gone and drove to Lagoa do Fogo. The sky was almost clear and the lake looked beautiful. This lake is also in the center of a volcano, the youngest on the island, formed (only!) approximately 15 million years ago.

There are three viewpoints over the lake and from the lower one there's a path to descend to the lake, where there are rocky beaches. The picture above is from the viewpoint in the "middle" and below is the road that goes to the lower viewpoint and then a picture taken from it.

My sister enjoying the view and resting from the way up. It's quite a challenge because the path is steep, but it's totally worth it.

After visiting Lagoa do Fogo we met our friends for lunch and spent the rest of the afternoon with them. They have a kayak and we tried to rent to more to be able to go all to a small island near Vila Franca, but the weather was so good that there were no available kayaks. Instead we spent the afternoon in Caloura, kayaking and snorkeling. We actually saw a lot of different fishes and red starfishes.
Vimos bastantes peixes diferentes e estrelas do mar vermelhas.

At the end of the day we went for some good food again. For lunch we ate different grilled fishes that I've never heard of before (pampo, lírio and something weird starting with al...) and it was one more delicious than the previous one! Just so good!
No final do dia fomos comer coisas boas novamente.

Seafood is also very good in Azores, as anything that comes from the sea. These were grilled mussels and they might have been the best mussels I have ever eaten.

We finished off the day by going to a beach party, that was actually near the beach but not on the beach. The atmosphere was cool but the music was not so much our style, as it was electronic music played by DJ's. It was still fun though to try something different.

There was only one more day left in the green island.
