Sete-Cidades and surroundings - São Miguel

I will start with a disclaimer: this post has loads of pictures! I tried but I just couldn't choose less. Not when the landscape is this great! On our third day in the island of São Miguel the weather was fantastic and we saw so many different things that I have almost 1000 pictures just from that day. So grab a cup of tea, sit down, relax and enjoy.
We started by visiting the other tea plantation, Porto Formoso, where again we could see the factory and taste one of their teas.

We wandered around the coast until we got to Santa Bárbara beach, where surfers go, to have lunch with our friend. We took the chance and visit the bunkers near the beach. They were built 1942 to help defending the island, as there were small apertures through machine guns could be fired. The chimney's seen in the picture provided fresh air. We went down and walk through a small tunnel, a sort of corridor to the different rooms.

Here you can actually see both sides of the island. The narrowest point is only 7 Km.

The lake of Empadadas might have been my favourite (it's hard to choose). It was perfectly round and it did make me feel like I was in the middle of a crater of a volcano. From there goes a path to Miradouro do Pico do Paul, where the view was again gorgeous.

Do you understand now why is it known as the Green Island?

I love the fact that the hydrangeas always grow along the roads. It brings the drive to a whole new level!

Slowly we were getting closer to the highlight of the day and the most famous view of São Miguel: the Sete-Cidades lake. The blue and green lake.
A lagoa azul e verde.

Lagoa de Santiago and the blue part of Lagoa das Sete-Cidades

King's view / Vista do Rei

According to the legend and the romantic story, the lake is blue and green because a princess and a boy, with blue and green eyes respectively, cried so much when they were forced apart, that they filled one side of the lake each. Very romantic. The reality is that due to its difference in depths and microorganisms variety the lake has a blue (deeper) and a green (more shallow) parts. The view over it is great from the King's viewpoint and right next to it there is a great abandoned hotel built in the 70's. According to locals the hotel was too large and went bankrupt after one year of its opening. It has been guarded for years, probably in the hope that someone would refurbish it, but a couple of years ago even the guards were removed. After that it has been open and one can now go in, walk around and get the best view over the lake from the roof.

Inside of the hotel, just to remind you what ugly looks like, so that you appreciate the rest of the pictures even more.

After a million pictures we drove down to the lakes and Sete-Cidades village, where we took a break and ate some snacks of the sweet flat breads again. From there we continued to Miradouro dos Mosteiros and Miradouro do Escalvado.

In Ponta da Ferraria, one can bathe in some natural pools of hot water if the tide is low. When the waves come they bring cold water and the contrast seems (we didn't try) to be wonderful. If the tide is high it doesn't work and the water is just cold. For the least adventurous there is a spa, where the water is always warm.

Of course with all this it was super late and since the sun was almost setting down we decided to go back to Miradouro do Escalvado to enjoy the sunset.

It was a gorgeous sunset! / Foi um pôr do sol espectacular!

The day ended with some great food again: small fried fish and steak. The fish is always fresh and the meat is always tender. The only problem is to choose. We were also always offered a typical starter: fresh cheese with spicy sauce or São Jorge cheese, which is matured. And pineapple for dessert. All great.

Everything was so beautiful and great, that at some point my sister, tired of holding her phone to take pictures, sighed and said: Damn it, it's always gorgeous! Thank you for staying until the end of the post. You are a survivor!

  1. Great photos again Sara. Gorgeous sunset!! I hadn't realized one could go inside the abandoned Furnas hotel. Great views from there. With the increased tourist to the islands, maybe it will be worthwhile opening it again someday...

    1. Thank you Sami! It's very hard to take bad pictures in a place like that. The hotel would probably be a success nowadays, but it needs quite a lot of work. You should take the chance and go there next time, before they close it.
